PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

CONGRATULATIONS ROCK-POP-MIME TEAM!  Wow, what a performance!!

Our Rock-Pop team and their coaches deserved their win last Saturday night for what was a polished, high-energy performance that looked absolutely spectacular.

As I alluded to last Friday, the team had given themselves every opportunity of winning because they had their goal of being the best on the nigh, had worked hard to achieve this goal, and had been supported every step of the way by a talented and equally dedicated and enthusiastic support crew of adults.

“High expectations are the key to everything” is a common quote these days, and applies equally to academic, sporting or cultural pursuits.

Equally true however, is the saying “A goal without actions is just a dream”.

Congratulations once again to everyone associated with our winning performance for turning your goal into reality.

SCHOOL NEWS

SUPPORTING JADE:  Please keep the raffle tickets supporting Jade Barratt’s attendance at the State softball Titles in Mount Isa coming in.

The 3 prizes on offer are well worth winning, and you’ll be supporting “one of our own”.

FREE DRESS DAY:  Thank-you for supporting today’s Free Dress Day.  Keep an eye out for photos in next week’s newsletter.

GOING, GOING, GHAN!  Rosie Dittman is officially on two weeks long service leave from this afternoon.

We wish her an exciting trip as she traverses the continent on the Ghan train.

Lorraine Insch will be taking Rosie’s place during this period.

POLICY REMINDER – HEALTHY FOODS:  EQ’s “Smart Choices” healthy foods policy encourages the provision of foods at school which are high in nutrition and low in sugar and fat content.  Lollies and softdrinks should not be brought to school for consumption at breaks, or before and after school.

P & C’s, Student Councils, etc are permitted to allow one “red day” per term where these designated “red food” items can be consumed.

MIRANI HIGH SCHOLARSHIPS:  When Mirani high principal Mrs Lewis visited the year 7’s eleven days ago she left scholarship application forms for each of the 3 areas on offer, namely Academic, Cultural and Sporting.

The final date for the return of these completed application forms to Hampden is next Friday, 14 September.

“BRAINTASTIC” COMMUNITY SOFTWARE PLAN:  Recently, we sent home coloured leaflets regarding participation in the “BRAINtastic! Reading Success” Community Software Plan.  The closing date for orders is Friday 14 September.

Please return your orders to the front office or your classroom teacher so that we can collate the orders and send them to EdAlive. Demo versions of the EdAlive products can be downloaded from www.edalive.com.  Our school will receive “$ for $” in EdAlive Discount Vouchers for every title ordered.

PLANNING HOLIDAYS IN 2008?  With 2007 now almost three-quarters spent, some families may be planning holidays for next year.

If this is the case it may be worth noting that Easter is early (21-24 March) and these 4 days are NOT attached to the school vacation as is usually the case.

The end of term 1 vacation is 7 – 11 April, two weeks after Easter.

M-S READATHON:  M-S Australia wishes to thank the 3 Hampden children who participated to help raise funds to assist the 16 000 Australians living with Multiple Sclerosis, and remind them to return their sponsorship funds so their hard earned Reading Rewards can be sent.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Most people are so busy knocking themselves out trying to do everything they think they should do, they never get around to do what they want to do.  – Kathleen Winsor

EEC NEWS

Another exciting week in Prep/Year One.

We made lots of predictions this week about rolling and sliding, pushes and pulls.  Using 3D shapes we predicted those that would slide, roll and slide and roll.  With the help of the students we sorted our findings into two hoops with a common area.  We then looked on the internet and found a diagram just like the one we made with hoops.  (A Venn Diagram)  We were able to record our information onto the diagram.

Our class also investigated BIG numbers.  The children tried to represent their number in pictures and words.  We then googled our key words and tried to find the actual number.  Shelby found that people have 100 000 hairs on their head (on average), and Cate found the number of people in the world.  Kade couldn’t find the number of fish in the sea because we don’t even know how many varieties there are yet!

Alicia brought a book about chemicals to school and the Prep children and Mrs Lisle investigated solubility.  The children represented the steps in the experiments and the results in pictures.  They then explained the experiment and their observations to the class.

P & C NEWS

Following the purchase of our two new large shade structures, the P & C has decided to offer for tender the 3 shade gazebos formerly used.

As soon as weather permits these 3 items will be erected at the front of the school for inspection purposes.

Tenders should be received at school by the last day of term, namely Friday 21 September, in clearly labelled envelopes.
