PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

ICT CONFERENCE:  “Learning and teaching are being transformed by the Web.  Structures that existed within many traditional institutions are becoming participatory, collaborative and interactive.  Schooling has yet to catch up and educators are being challenged to radically re-locate and re-define traditional learning spaces and frameworks.  The hallmarks of change are:  harnessing relational technology, developing a strategic framework to deliver a 21st century learning experience and engaging in a mature discussion about the learning agenda.”

This comment by Keynote Speaker Greg Whitby, Executive Director of Schools, Diocese of Parramatta, set the scene for a very stimulating conference focusing on integrating ICTs into teaching all subject areas, which I and three other Hampden teaching staff attended last weekend at the Gold Coast.

We all came back from this “Leading e-learning” conference with greater insights into what we can do at Hampden to accelerate the pace of learning by maximising the use and integration of ICTs in our classrooms.

HEADLICE:  A “Headlice Alert” went home this week for children in the 2/3 class.

Headlice are easy to contract and difficult to eradicate, so I urge all parents to take these “alerts” seriously and thoroughly check through the hair of your 2/3 child and other siblings.

Thank-you to the parent who informed us of their “discovery” so we could alert everyone else.

Howard Frost

Principal.

SCHOOL NEWS

CROSS COUNTRY SUCCESS:

Congratulations to our runners who had a very successful morning at Seaforth yesterday.  Please read all the details in Sue Wales’ report.

ELECTORATE CALENDAR:  Daniel Barker, communications officer for the Hon. De-Anne Kelly MP, was so impressed with our student leaders he wants to include their photo on De-Anne’s annual calendar!

By now those parents should have received a copy of his e-mail. Please let me know by Tuesday if you do not agree to this request.

COMING EVENTS:  In the week 21-25 May both the Arts Council and the Questacon Science Circus will visit Hampden.

As both require the payment of a fee the Arts Council envelope will be sent home today, with the Questacon envelope next Friday.

Hopefully this will help “spread the lead” a little.

SCHOOL AUDIT:  This Wednesday the school will have its biennial audit when internal auditor Mark Staunton visits.

BOOKCLUB:  As last “library day” was Anzac Day some classes did not receive their Bookclub issue until this week.

The closing date for the return of any Bookclub orders has therefore been extended until next Thursday the 10th.

SPORTS SHIRTS:  A reminder that anyone wishing to have sports house shirts screen printed should drop their shirts into the office by May 18.

INTERSCHOOL SPORT:  Next Friday Hampden will play a series of sports against Mirani Primary. Stay tuned.

RELIEF CLEANERS:  If you are interested in being on our school’s list of relief cleaners, please give me a call and I’ll let you know the requirements.

Currently our list is only one name long!

MORE CHAMPS!!  Congratulations to Jordan Proctor who was selected in the combined Calen/Pioneer Valley basketball team to contest the Mackay trials, and similarly to Michael Volker and Jade Barratt for being chosen in the Calen touch football team.

A great effort, guys!!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

The bad news is time flies.  The good news is you’re the pilot.

Michael Alshuler, Leadership coach

CROSS COUNTRY

After 2 months of hard work, our Cross Country competitors put their fitness to the test yesterday, at the Interschool Cross Country held at Seaforth.

2007 saw the largest contingent ever participate at the Interschool level with 23 children from Years 4-7 taking part in the event.

They are all to be congratulated for displaying wonderful qualities of determination and perseverance as they took on the ‘Seaforth Hill’ in rather hot conditions.

The results were as follows:

13yr girls – won by Sarah Smith

12yr boys – won by Michael Volker

12yr girls – second, Ellise Burston

11yr girls – won by Chelsea Perna

10yr boys – won by Dexter Edmonds

                    second, James Medway

                    forth, Damian Volker

                    sixth, Sean Gee

10yr girls – third, Tiffaney Wales

Congratulations to all our other competitors:  Nicholas Perna, Jake Balsillie, Lachlan Thompson, Demi Cruickshanks, Darcie Cahill, Anthony Leeding, Winston Dwyer, Ben Wales, Jade Barratt, Bronson Walters, Laura Thompson and Jordan Perna.

Thanks to all the parents who came down and supported our team.

Thank-you to Stephanie Cruickshanks who continues to support and encourage our children at every opportunity.

Stephanie will resume training on Monday in preparation for the inter-district event being held at Sarina next week.

Everyone is welcome to join in these training sessions at 8.30am every morning.

Our final ‘fitness incentive’ prizes were drawn on parade this morning.  Congratulations to Ellise Burston, the lucky winner of the $20 voucher and to  Kody Erixon, the winner of the portable CD player.

DIAGNOSTIC NET – YEAR TWO

All children in Years 1, 2 and 3 are involved in a process known as the Year Two Diagnostic Net where their progress in Reading, Writing and Number is assessed.  As part of this process, some Year Two students will undertake specifically designed Validation tasks over the coming weeks to provide teachers with valuable information regarding students’ progress.  These tasks are designed to fit into the regular class routine and will not prove disruptive to his/her learning.

After this Validation process, parents will receive a Diagnostic Net Report and will be informed if children have been identified to receive extra support in Reading, Writing or Number.

Should you have any further questions regarding this Validation process, do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

EEC NEWS

Hello Everyone

Prep/Year One received some new equipment this week that has already been put to good use – three scooter boards and a body rocker to enhance upper body strength, and a rebounding net to improve hand/eye co-ordination.  We had fun trying to guess what was in the boxes using the clues on the outside – net weight, gross weight, materials, handling, and size.  (We weren’t very successful.)

Afternoon session begins this week with the children taking on roles as host, weatherperson and presenters.  This activity gives the children opportunities to hone their skills as speakers and listeners.

Buddy Reading has begun again this term.  Our 6/7 Buddies now help us to produce a visual response to the book we have experienced – either pictorial or written.

P & C NEWS

Just a quick reminder this week about the general meeting for May which will be held on Monday 21st at 7.30pm.  All Welcome.

GROUNDSCARE NEWS

As we begin a new month the grass hardly seems to have slowed down in its growth rate, which is probably not good news for this month’s roster team of the Leeding and Proctor families!!

Thanks for your continuing support everyone.
