PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

ROCK-POP-MIME:  When Hampden’s team hits the stage tomorrow night there will be a lot of expectations being shouldered by our young performers, one of which will be that they repeat last year’s feat and win the major prize.

Whether or not this occurs, only time till tell, but what I can say already without any fear of being wrong, is that each member is already a winner in so many ways.

The judges will make the final call on placings, however I give our team members every chance of retaining their “crown” due to the positive way they have approached this year’s event and the support of the adults involved.

There are certain elements any team needs to achieve success, beginning with the coach and assistant coaches to prepare their players and decide on ‘the moves’ and backed up by the managers to provide the equipment and logistics, and the trainers, strappers, water-boys, etc who are responsible for getting the team into their uniforms and onto the field.  And then of course, are the participants themselves.

I am confident to say that once again this year, HAMPDEN HAS SUCH A TEAM.

“Coach” Allison Witham has prepared and rehearsed the team well, ably assisted by Barb Perna.  Managers Annette Medway and Rosie Dittman have been of enormous support with the logistics of organisation, whilst behind the scenes in the ‘dressing room’ untold hours of work have been done by Lorraine Insch, Julie Burns and Kerri-Anne Cahill preparing costumes and backdrops.  ‘Strapper’ Steph Cruickshanks will be in her glory on Saturday teasing hair and applying make-up to our squad looking as great as I’m sure they’ll perform.

Then there are the team supporters, and in the weight for age stakes there wouldn’t be too many other schools to match the enthusiasm shown by Hampden parents in the lead-up to tomorrow’s big event!  The supporters encourage the team, and in return the team performs at its best to please its supporters.

And finally there are the players, and in our case, some quite young performers.  But what they may lack in age and experience they certainly make up for with enthusiasm, energy and desire.  What more could you ask for?

This morning we held a dress rehearsal, and if you were able to be present I’m sure you would agree that the costumes and props were simply outstanding and put some very sweet icing on an already mouth watering performance.

Congratulations to all involved on a wonderful team effort, and I wish you every success tomorrow night.  As I said earlier, however, you’re already winners in so many ways.

MINISTERIAL HOLIDAY:  A reminder that all Calen Cluster schools, including Hampden, will be closed this Monday 03 September for the special Ministerial student-free day.

Pupils have a holiday, teachers only have to work!!

FATHER’S DAY:  A special day indeed this Sunday, don’t you agree, Dads??

Enjoy the cards and gifts your children made you here at school with great care and love.

It’s a special Father’s Day for me this year, my first as a Grand-dad!

Howard Frost

Principal.

SCHOOL NEWS

HIGH SCHOOL VISIT:  Last Tuesday Mirani High principal Mrs Lewis visited Hampden to discuss orientation arrangements and the benefits of attending Mirani High with our Year 7’s.

Two familiar faces accompanied Mrs Lewis, namely the male captains for 2007, our own ex-Hampden students Newton Wiseman and Joel Faltinsky.

All three did a great job of “selling” their high school and have laid the foundations for two orientation visits to Mirani later in the year.

Also on the visit’s agenda was Mirani’s Scholarship program, whereby the school’s P & C supports financially high achievers in the 3 fields of Academic, Cultural and Sporting excellence.

SUPPORTING JADE:  We have already had an excellent response to our raffle in support of assisting Jade to attend the State Softball Titles in Mt Isa.

Thank-you, and please keep those sold raffle tickets coming in!

FREE DRESS DAY:  This coming Friday 07 will be the Student Council’s free dress day for term 3, with funds raised going to support Special Needs children in our community.

The theme for this free dress day will be Sports, in keeping with all the footy (and other) finals happening at the moment.

SCHOOL CAMP FORMS:  Thirty-one students have now returned their completed school camp permission/medical forms, a great response in just a week and a half since they were sent home.

Parent supervisor “sign-on” forms will be sent home in about a week’s time, along with the next addition of the camp newsletter, the “north Keppel News”.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“If you’re nervous about your passion, you’re not passionate about it.”

Bobby Flay – chef/restaurateur and TV personality.

ROCK POP MIME

Students involved in Rock Pop Mime are reminded to be at the school by around 3.30 on Saturday afternoon for costume call, make-up and hair.  Please bring your own hair ties, brush, comb and lipstick.  If you were asked to bring socks, shoes, ribbons, leotards, etc ensure you have these with you.  We hope to leave from the school by 5.15.

See you at Caneland Sound Shell on Saturday evening at 6.30!  Come along and show your support for Hampden’s Rock Pop Mime group.

EEC NEWS

Happy Father’s Day to all our dads.  We’ve found out what you do in your sheds all day according to one of our crew – sleep!  We hope you enjoy your presents.

Our survey of Australian animals has revealed that the frilled neck lizard is Hampden State School’s most popular animal.  Mr Frost likes koalas – he has one on his coffee cup.  Mrs Burns likes frilled neck lizards – she has one at home.  Miss Woods likes quolls.  (We were very pleased that the quoll got one vote at least.)  Prep/Year one’s most popular animal was the rainbow lorikeet.  Now we go online and finish our second rap for the Literature festival.

Jake showed us how to make coloured swirls this week, and how to cast a fishing line – over the sandpit!

Andrew explained how a water pump worked and where we could find one like it at school.  We followed the pipes from the pumps to the outlets.  (No-one knew there was a sink in the library until yesterday.)

We had another slithery visitor (a tree snake) on Thursday morning but Mr Frost told him he wasn’t welcome and he went away.  (Not far enough for our plumber who was very watchful while working under the building!)

P & C NEWS

Thank-you to the many families who have been helping out with our fundraising by serving at the footy bars.

This Sunday (Grand Final Day) is the last of these, however we do have FOUR BARS to operate, so if you are able to help for just 2 hours please phone President Frank on 49540274.  We’ve almost got all slots covered.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Child Protection Week is a national event to raise awareness of child protection issues.  It is held annually from the first Sunday in September and is co-ordinated nationally by the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN).  The aim of Child Protection Week is to extend the message about child protection to as many people in the community as possible.  A number of Government Departments and Community Agencies have formed a committee to organise activities to promote ‘Child Protection Week 2007’.  This year Child Protection Week runs from Monday 3rd September to Saturday 9th September 2007.
