To those vacating executive positions I wish to express my appreciation for a job well done, and for the co-operation you’ve shown as we’ve worked together for the benefit of our children and the school as a whole.

In particular I would like to say a special thanks to outgoing treasurer Bruce Crozier for the extremely professional yet practical way in which he performed the duties asked of him, plus a whole lot more!

As we have a P & C Association it seems appropriate now to remind Bruce and Carol, and other families too, that you are still welcome at Hampden after your last child has gone to high school.

For those not able to make it along to the meeting I’ve included a copy of Frank Perna’s “President’s Report” below.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2006

Here we are again, another year on and another year older.  Here I am trying to put pen to paper to write my report.  It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was explaining about all the activities that we, the P & C, have been involved in for the year.  Before I start however I would once again like to thank the other members of the executive and the parents who attended and participated in the various activities and meetings that were held through the year.  The year was very successful due to the great support and effort of these people.

We may not have had that many actual fundraisers this year, but those we did were very profitable, these included

  • Looking after the bar at the Mackay & District Rugby League Home games and final series.  (We have been asked to do this again this year and will require plenty of support to accomplish this)
  • Bunning’s sausage sizzle
  • Helping serve at the Krusty Demons
  • Hundred club (happening again this year)
  • School mowing & maintenance
  • Tuckshop

Once again a special mention to Cheryl & Sue and all those that helped out with the tuckshop.  The home baking has allowed the tuckshop to become a major fundraiser for the school and I hope to see this trend of parent involvement continue.  Also many thanks to those who put up their hands to do the school mowing, it takes a couple of hours on the weekend one or twice a month and those people have done a sterling job.  Once again thank you to al who volunteered.

The question can be asked since we have done so much fund raising where has all the funds gone.  This can be answered in many ways,

  • We made final payment to the air con
  • Cemented the front entry to the school
  • Provide free bus for school sports and arts programs
  • Behaviour Management Rewards

I do encourage people to buy the hundred club tickets as this can become a simple but effective fundraiser.  Assistance with the school mowing roster is also an effective way for the school to raise funds as it saves us having to employ a gardener.  Any assistance no matter how small is of great benefit to our school community.

I would like to thank everyone for their support and help and do encourage everyone to attend some of the P & C meetings and have your say, as we are always open to new people and new ideas.  By the way I would like to see some new faces on the committee (include my own position) as some new blood so to speak will only benefit the school so those out there who wish to nominate please do  you will find it a rewarding experience.

Frank Perna

SCHOOL NEWS

GET ACTIVE:  The whole school enjoyed their visit yesterday from three Qld Academy of Sport athletes as part of the “Get Active Queensland Sports Program”.

Games followed by a “healthy lifestyle” lesson had all bases covered, and the kids even received a ball and sticker to take home.

Thanks to Bronson and Sarah for giving our visitors a vote of thanks on completion.

CONGRATULATIONS NEWTON:  Former student and Mirani High captain Newton Wiseman has just been selected in the Central Qld Clay Target Shooting Junior and Open teams to contest the state titles soon.

Perhaps we’ll be watching him shoot at the Commonwealth Games in a couple of years??

RUGBY LEAGUE UPDATE:  Six upper-school boys have returned permission forms for this competition.

Because of the wet conditions of the rugby fields the starting date has been put back a week to Wed 14th March.

Hampden will be combining with Marian State School to form a team.  More details as they become available.

EEC NEWS

Hello Everyone,

Our Reading Buddies from Year 6/7 are doing a fantastic job!  Each week they visit our classroom to read to our students.  The Buddy Reading experience enhances book knowledge, promotes interest in reading and ensures that the children investigate a wide variety of literature.  Buddy Reading also develops a close bond between our younger and older students that extends beyond the classroom.  Keep up the good work Year 6/7.

Two more spiders this week – a jumping spider and a very, very large hairy, brown variety with enormous palps found, (thankfully), at someone’s house!

Many, many thanks to the Mums and Dads who helped out with Literacy and Numeracy groups this week.  Offers to help have been flooding in.  Our students really benefit from your interest, enthusiasm and hard work!

Yours sincerely

Annette Medway

P & C NEWS

A big thank-you to all our volunteers who did a fabulous job at the footy last weekend.

The setting-up, pulling down and serving was made much easier thanks to the help of everyone concerned.

A special thanks to the “old brigade” who no longer have students at school but helped anyway (Croziers and Guzowskis), community supporter Ronda Duncan, the staff (Helen and Howard), and all the younger generation of current and former students who were also a great help.

WORKING BEE:  You may have noticed the “Working Bee” indicated on last week’s calendar.

This year we’re trialling a Saturday afternoon time slot as many parents have Sunday morning sporting commitments.

Please keep Saturday 17 March free from 1.30pm for our Working Bee.

Full details next week.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“You don’t have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things – to compete.  You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals.”  Sir Edmund Hillary, Mountaineer and Explorer

CROSS COUNTRY

It’s that time of the year for Cross Country training to begin.

Training starts next week and it would be great to see all students participate.

Training can be fun and not everyone has to be a winner.  Whether you run, jog or walk is entirely up to you, all you have to do is have fun, get some fitness and be healthy.

I would be advisable that those participating bring a spare pair of sandshoes to either run in or to wear for the day due to the track being a little wet.  Spare clothes are also a good idea but this is your decision.

All parents who wish to join us please do.

Starting time – 8.30am.

Hope to see you all then.

Mrs Wales and Steph Cruickshanks.
