PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

WELCOME ABOARD!  It’s my pleasure to officially welcome Karen Gee to the Hampden “crew’ as a permanent employee of Education Queensland.

Karen has been working continuously for over 2 years in temporary/casual teacher-aide positions at several schools, and hence has been able to successfully apply to convert her casual teacher-aide hours to a permanent position.

Karen will continue to work on Thursdays and Fridays here at Hampden.

SCHOOL CAMP ’08:  Our school camp destination this year will be Townsville, during the week 10-14 November.

Now that our accommodation has been confirmed at the Riverside Convention Centre planning can commence on the actual itinerary which will include a day at Magnetic Island, visits to Reef H.Q. and the Museum of Tropical Queensland, the North Qld Science Education Centre, Institute of marine Science, the ice-skating rink, the Strand waterpark, and many more.

Our last school camp to Townsville was in 2000, so I’m looking forward to this long overdue return to our “northern neighbour”.

CROSS COUNTRY EVENTS:  Congratulations to all our runners who participated at Seaforth yesterday in the Calen Sub-District trials.

The tough terrain and stiff competition always makes this a challenging event, but as usual our team has made us proud of their efforts, regardless of where each individual was placed.

The first four in each event have gained the right to progress to the Mackay trials to be held at the Sarina Gold Course on Wednesday, and as you can see by the list printed on the following page Hampden athletes are well represented.

Thank-you to Sue Wales for organising our cross country team again this year.

MONTHLY CALENDAR:  Yes, almost another month finished, and with so much happening in so many areas I hope you make good use of the planning calendar on the back page to check the events there, and to add your own as they arise.

Howard Frost

Principal.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Time is our most valuable asset, yet we tend to waste it, kill it, and spend it rather than invest it.

From The Treasury of Quotes by Jim Rohn

EEC NEWS

Hello Everyone

Prep/Year One enjoyed their excursion to Earth Quest, the Libraries and the Sustainable Home.  Thank you to our willing helpers who made the day a wonderful educational experience – Mr Perna, Mrs De Paoli, Mrs Tomlin, Mrs Cahill, and Mrs lisle.

Our Prep people are busy in the fruit shop again, and they would like to say a special thank you to Mrs Burns for bringing in the shopping bags for us to use!

This week in Prep/Year One we brainstormed everything we knew about clocks.  We talked about what they sound like, and look like, and what they do.  We noticed that the little red hand ticked 60 times around the clock and moved faster than any of the others.  Mrs Leahy helped us to make a ‘sun clock’ outside, and we cut and pasted our favourite o’clock time.  Some of our favourite times are nine o’clock when school begins, three o’clock when school finishes, one o’clock when it is big lunch time and five o’clock when Dad gets home from work.  We are not trying to find out what time our favourite TV programs begin.

Miss Refalo visited our class from CQU this week to find out how we learn to read.  The Year Ones showed her all the strategies they have been trying our, such as reading on and reading back, looking at the beginning sound, making sense, looking for little words in a big word, listening and remembering chunks of text.  Next week she would like to look at how we learn to write!

WEEKLY CLASS AWARDS

There were no weekly awards last week due to the Easter long weekend, however we do have one Milestone Award achiever to acknowledge today.

Congratulations to ASHLYN BURLEY who is now a CHAMPION STUDENT with 20 certificates.  Well done, Ashlyn!

P & C NEWS

We are still looking for people to help set up the boxes for the Cutters game on Friday afternoon and stack the eskies on Saturday morning.  If you can spare a couple of hours tomorrow straight after school it would be greatly appreciated.

CLASSROOM ROUND-UP

On Thursday 20 March our whole school travelled to Mackay to visit the Sustainable Home in Mt Pleasant and Earth Quest at Gordon White and Mackay City Libraries.

At the Gordon White Library we had a tour of the library services and Helen Page, the Young People’s Librarian, read us stories. There were also some Earth Quest science exhibits at this Library.

We had lunch at the Mackay City Library before visiting the Earth Quest exhibits there and the Years 4 to 7 played Touch in the grounds of the Mackay Entertainment Centre, while the Preps to Year 3 had fun in the Reading Pit.

On the Bus trip back to school we had Easter Egg treats and some of us sang songs.

I liked the 5star toilet at the Sustainable House because when you flush it the water you wash your hands in is recycled into the toilet. Jack Yr 7, Winston Yr 5

I liked the bathroom and the laundry shute at the Sustainable House and the Library people were very nice. Lachlan Yr 5

The game of Touch we had was awesome. Sean Yr 6

On the bus trips all of the students sang rhymes and songs such as “The Wheels on the Bus” and “Who stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar?” Billy Brown Yr 7

I liked the Sustainable Home, singing on the bus and the Touch Footy. Taylia Yr 5

Earth Quest was pretty cool and educational but the Sustainable Home was my favourite part of the excursion. Damian Yr 6

I liked the Earth Quest because it was interesting to read, look at and do the activities. Demi Yr 5 /Jordan Proctor Yr 7

At the Sustainable House we had a tour and the nice lady told us about how we could live in that house forever because it has everything we need. Emily Yr 6

I liked the bamboo floor in the house because it was very creative – who’d have thought of bamboo? Darcie Yr 5

MOBILE LIBRARY – TEMPORARY CESSATION OF SERVICE

I wish to advise you that the Mobile Library is undergoing major refurbishment during April and May, and as a result, will not be in service between 31 March 2008 and 14 June 2008. Normal service should resume for your school on Wednesday, 18 June 2008, but we will give you written notice if this date has to change for any reason.
