PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

FAREWELL:  Sadly the end of term always seems to bring with it the departure of some students and the arrival of others.

Unfortunately at this time Nakita Daniels and her family are moving out of the area to a new location.

On behalf of all at Hampden I wish you the very best, and hope to see you back at some stage in the future.

On the other side of the coin we have two new families enrolled to start next term and they will be introduced in our first newsletter of term 3.

As for staff, Kerri-ann Cahill will be taking “leave” from her voluntary/relief teacher-aide work for a while to fill a temporary full-time position at Seaforth.  Enjoy your time there Kerri-ann, but don’t forget to come back!!

A special thank-you to Jodi Morrison who has volunteered to replace Kerri-ann.

ENGQUEST:  The year 6/7’s are fully engaged in their Engquest 2008 technology projects at the moment, with the ideas, planning and design stages complete and the construction stage now commenced.

A special thank-you to parent and former teacher Kylie Leady for sharing her considerable expertise with us to lead the class in their tasks.

REPORTS/INTERVIEWS:  As mentioned previously, student reports will go home towards the end of the first week back next term, with most parent-teacher interviews occurring during the second week.

By now all parents should have received a letter and interview booking sheet to return to the class teachers.  Please return these to school ASAP so formal appointment times can be arranged.  These will be sent home with the reports at the end of week 1 next term.

The staff are looking forward to seeing as many parents as possible at these interviews after the holidays to share news about your childrens’ efforts in a constructive and positive manner.

In the meantime, I wish to thank the staff and all families for the way you continue to work together with the goodwill that encourages the best from our children.

Enjoy a safe and restful vacation.

Howard Frost

Principal.

SCHOOL NEWS

FORGOTTEN AWARDS:  Although they were available on the day, the silver and bronze medallions which were to be presented to the age division place getters were overlooked and not handed out.

These have now been distributed to the individual schools for presenting to the recipients, and in Hampden’s case this means LAURA THOMPSON and JORDAN PERNA are now the proud owners of silver medallions as runners up in the 12 y.o. girls division.

SCHOOL CAMP ’08:  The second edition of the camp newsletter “The Townsville Tabloid” was handed out yesterday, the most important aspect being the week’s itinerary.

After the holidays we’ll re-confirm attendees, appoint parent helpers, and do a final costing for invoices.

ANZAC HERO:  Congratulations to Ben Wales who was one of ten winners of this year’s ANZAC Day Competition promoted through the Regional Education Office.

CWA AWARDS:  Maureen Peach visited on Monday afternoon to present medallions and certificates to the high performers in this year’s CWA country of study (Afghanistan) competition.

Once again Hampden students gained a large number of the placings for their entries, as well as many “Highly Commended” and “Commended” certificates.

EEC NEWS

Hello Everyone

Congratulations Prep/Year One on a productive and exciting Semester One!  Here are some of the activities we have been engaged in lately.

Zoe brought a book about marble games to school and we found a game we would like to play called ‘Marble Arches”.  Because we are only beginners, we decided to rewrite some of the rules to make it easier.  We didn’t want to lose any marbles to the Arch Keeper either!

Our challenge yesterday was to make seven different arches for the game out of all the different commercial construction materials we have in our room.  The arches had to be wide enough for beginners to flick the marble through and strong enough so they wouldn’t fall over.

Today we are going to try and make some arches out of the materials in our useful box.  If our marble rolls through the Arch we win the number of points allocated to that arch, and the Arch Keeper pays us in wishing stones for our Wishing Jar.  On Friday we will play the Great marble Challenge with a special prize for the person who wins the most Wishing Stones.

We had a visit last Friday from Mr Perna, the Jolly Green Giant and the MX 250!  We spent the afternoon examining bins, struts, rollers,

hydraulics, rams, elevators, air tanks, and fuel tanks.  We read all of the warning signs on the machines and watched as the bin was tipped up and the elevators started.  We investigated the different hitches on each of the trailers and machines and watched all the moving parts, as they were reversed and driven out of the school grounds.  We learned that for the tractors to work they need air, water, oil and fuel!

Now we can’t wait for the harvest season to get underway so we can see them working in the fields!  Thank you Mr Perna – you were able to answer lots of ‘curly’ questions.  (Don’t forget to put those mud guards on soon!)

Thank you also to our helpers in Prep Year One (parents, specialist teachers and teacher aides).  Have a wonderful holiday.  We look forward to seeing you again in Semester Two.

ROCK POP MIME:  There will be a meeting to discuss the Rock Pop Mime tomorrow (Friday) at 3.15pm.
