PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

FAREWELL & THANKS, SUE:  After almost 15 years servicing the Calen Cluster Schools as visiting Learning Support Teacher, Sue Palazzi is moving on.

A re-structuring of the way learning support is delivered to schools is currently underway within the department, and until this is complete Gail Volker will be Hampden’s L.S.T.

Sue has been offered a position at the Mackay Special School which she has accepted as she has previously worked with special needs children.

Sue, or “Mrs P” as she was often referred to by the children, will be greatly missed within the cluster and by the staff, students and parents of Hampden as her enthusiasm for the work she performed was unparalleled.

On behalf of the Hampden school community I thank Sue for her professionalism over these many years, and wish her the very best in her new role.

DROUGHT RELIEF FUNDING:  The school has received an allocation of funding form the Federal Government for drought relief assistance for families, to be used in 2008.

Following discussion with the P & C and after considering the guidelines for expending the funds, it has been decided to use this money for a range of purposes which will help lessen the financial burden on all families.  These include providing class sets of expensive items such as dictionaries, flash drives, etc; reducing the transport costs for bus fares for sport, excursions, camps, etc, and halving the admission fees for the 3 remaining Arts Council performances from $6 to $3 per child.

SPORTS DAYS:  Yes, it’s only a week away from the thrills, the colour, the excitement, the agony and the ecstasy of Hampden’s Inter-House Sports Day!!

As usual some events (800m/discus) will be held earlier in the week (see the program provided), however Friday is the BIG DAY when speculation will be put to rest concerning which is the best team in 2008!

Come along and be a part of what is always an enjoyable and entertaining day and bring other family members and friends if you like – it’s also a day to catch-up with others.

And in this the Year of Physical Activity and the Olympic Games, we might even have an event or two for parents to get involved in!

SCHOOL NEWS

SPORTS SHIRTS:  Another big thank-you to Lorraine Insch and Julie Burns for screen-printing our sports house shirts this year.  Their new designs certainly have proved popular!!

YEAR 7 SHIRTS:  A reminder that this is the last week for year 7’s to bring in shirts for printing.

MATHS/SCIENCE SURVEY:  Thank-you to the many families who have returned permission forms allowing their children (yrs 4-7) to participate in further surveys regarding attitudes towards maths and science subjects.

CONGRATULATIONS CHELSEA:  Originally selected as a reserve, Chelsea now has the opportunity to play in the Mackay Girls Soccer Team at the Capricornia Trials over the next few days.

As a result of this she will be away next Tuesday, the day of our inter-school 800m events.  The girls 12 y.o. 800m will now be run at 2.00pm the following day, Wednesday 28th.

McDONALDS MATHS COMP:  Good luck to our two teams taking part in this event on Wednesday.  It’s a great learning experience for everyone.

TEACHER APPRECIATION:  Almost everyone can recall an inspirational teacher they had at school.  Teachers make an important contribution to the lives of our young people and help shape the future of our country.  The National Excellence In Teaching Association (NEiTA) provides the opportunity for school communities – parent associations, school councils, individual parents, secondary student councils, and community organisations – to nominate teachers who contribute excellence.

Nomination forms can be collected from the school office or the local library.  They can also be downloaded or completed online at: www.neita.com.au or requested from the NEiTA Secretariat by phoning free call 1800 624 487.

CLASSROOM ROUND-UP

The year 6/7 class wrote brief newspaper reports following the visit to school on Tuesday of the Tenix/Questacon touring maths squad presenters.  Her are some samples:

Tenix Questacon Maths Show – Chelsea Perna

On Tuesday 20th May Fay and David came up from Canberra to show the Hampden students that maths isn’t just about numbers.

First Fay and David showed the students a slide show about maths and patterns.  The maths was enjoyed by the students.  After the maths show President of Hampden State School’s Student Council Jordan Perna, gave a vote of thanks.

Later on after the students’ morning tea they went upstairs to the library for a hands-on maths workshop.  The children did puzzles and had heaps of fun.

All the students enjoyed the experience.

Tenix Questacon Maths Show – Laura Thompson

On Tuesday 20 May the Tenix Questacon Maths Show came to Hampden State School for a lesson on Maths.

Fay and David from Questacon gave the grades 2 to 7 classes another outlook on Maths. It was quite fun and exciting.  Later on Fay and David set up a workshop in the Hampden State School Library.  Everyone was given puzzles and mind bogglers.  It was GREAT!!

At the end of the day everyone enjoyed maths!

Tenix Questacon Maths Show – Emily Chidgey

On Tuesday the 20th may, David and Fay, members of the Tenix Questacon Maths Squad came to Hampden.  They set up a slide show about how maths can be fun and it’s not just about numbers.  They came all the way from Canberra to show all the kids.

First they showed the grades 2-7 the slide show about math.  Then after morning tea the grades 4-5 and 6-7’s went to the library to do the hands-on workshop where they had to figure out really hard puzzles.

It was an interesting and different way to look at maths.

Tenix Questacon Maths Show – Billy Brown

On Tuesday the 20th May two people from Canberra came to Hampden to show the years 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 about maths.  There was a slide show and some of the students were asked to answer some questions.

Afterwards there was a workshop and the students had to solve some problems and do some number patterns.

The idea of the show was to demonstrate to the students that maths is not just about numbers.

Tenix Questacon Maths Show – Sean Gee

On Tuesday the 20th May, David and Fay came to Hampden State School to teach people that maths isn’t just about numbers.  David and Fay came from Canberra and they have been visiting schools in Mackay for 3 weeks now.

Later after lunch the year 6/7 class went up to the library for a hands-on workshop.  The year 6/7 class was working on puzzles which were extra hard.

Tenix Questacon Maths Show – Damian Volker

On Tuesday the 20th of May Fay and David came to Hampden State School to tell children that maths isn’t only all about numbers.

In the morning, grades 2-7 assembled in the grade 6-7 classroom so that David, and Fay could try and change childrens’ attitudes towards maths.  David was very funny.  Straight after the maths show Jordan Perna gave a vote of thanks.  After little lunch the grade 6-7’s went up to the library to do a hands-on workshop.

It appeared that everyone had a brilliant time and can’t wait for them to come back.
