Parents
& Citizens’ Assn meets 3rd Monday of each month at

REPORTING TO PARENTS: Hampden’s Semester 1 reporting of student achievement data will be provided after the holidays this year, with reports to be sent home towards the end of week 1, and parent-teacher interviews soon after that.
With the new national testing program for years 3, 5, 7 & 9 occurring this term, along with the Hampden and Calen District sports days and a myriad of other activities and events, I considered it would be less “stressful” for both staff and parents if reporting was left until after the holidays.
CALEN DISTRICT SPORTS DAY: Day one of this year’s Calen Sports was a successful one for us on Tuesday with first, second and third placings in several events, and many noteworthy performances from all competitors.
We are therefore looking forward to tomorrow’s “main day” with great enthusiasm.
Best wishes to all our students competing.
Whilst the major aim of Calen Sports Day is to select a sub-district team to compete at the Mackay District Carnival, we also have as equally important goals for the day the ideals of maximum participation and development of team/school spirit through appreciating the efforts of others and encouraging them to do their best.
Information about Friday was included in last week’s newsletter, however repeated here are the important points to note:
As the P & C now has a third shade structure sun safety shouldn’t be an issue, and we shouldn’t be hard to find either!
Last year our school was able to come home with the shield for most points, the Relay Shield and the Ballgames Shield! Wouldn’t it be great to have a repeat again this year!?
The day is always a great way for parents and friends to “network”, and Hampden is always well represented by adults as well as students.
I’m looking forward to yet another enjoyable and successful Calen Sports Day, as I’m sure the students and many of you are as well.
GO HAMPDEN!!
Howard Frost
Principal.

Thank-you for allowing your children to participate.
The A-A-S program will return in term 3, however at this time we are unsure of exactly what activities will be offered, or on which afternoons they will be run. These details will be forwarded early in term 3.
AUSKICK: Still on sporting theme, the AUSKICK program will be offered over an 8 week period during term 3, most likely at lunchtime each Wednesday.
More details about this will also be provided early next term.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Attitudes separate winning from whining. – Anon

Hello Everyone,
Lots of enthusiastic readers in Prep/Year One have been reading to their helpers every morning before school and at home with their families. Keep up the good work everyone.
Did you know a story doesn’t need words on a page or pictures in a book? Stories can be told as well as written, and our class has been listening to stories being told and retelling them in our own words, acting them out and representing them with drawings and paintings! We have also been telling some of our own stories!
Soon we will investigate written stories – narratives – and find out how they are structured so we can ‘write’ and represent our own.
Come and see our dioramas! We used lots of different materials to represent our imaginary animals’ habitats – sticks, leaves, grass and a variety of collage materials. We all made sure our animals’ habitats had shelter, food and water.
In math we investigated the numbers on boxes from our useful box. We found numbers that told us how many were inside, how much it weighed, when to use it by, how much it cost, what size it was, phone numbers and barcodes.
We noticed that boxes of tissues and wrapping didn’t have use by dates on them. The biggest number was a Samara’s box but it was the smallest box!
We also noticed that the numbers on our boxes often had a letter or word following them such as 500g, 200 teabags, 150g net, 12 muesli bars.
We also used clues on the outside of the box to guess what was once inside. Most of the time there were picture clues or easy works to read, but Adam and Lee had to smell theirs to find out! We decided Adam’s box once had tea bags in it and Lee’s box once had soap in it.

REMINDER: P & C Monthly Meeting for June will be held on Monday 16th at 7.30pm. All welcome.
TUCKSHOP ORDERS: As there is a public holiday next week, could all orders be in by Tuesday next week.
To all,
Last night was a great night for
QUEENSLANDERS as we convincingly won the Origin decider. It was watched by a few die hard supporters
at the Hampden State School Library on the BIG screen, Rita Nicol being the
most vocal. Don’t forget that this
Friday is the Calen Sports Day and parent support is crucial to Hampden bringing
home the trophy. Also the Cutter home
game is on this Saturday night and as always we are looking for helpers to
support our school, so if you are available please do not hesitate in
contacting Karen Gee and volunteering your time for the benefit of the P&C.
So in closing go the Cutters, go the Maroons and go
Rex Munchow
P&C Secretary

Book Fair back orders have
now arrived and it won’t be long before students are enjoying the variety of
new books we have available in the Library.
Thanks again to all
