PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY:  As many of you would be aware, each year staff, students and parents at State Schools across Queensland are asked to ‘rate’ their satisfaction levels across a range of aspects of school and schooling.  These include curriculum, technology, student outcomes and the school climate.

Next week the 2007 survey will be randomly distributed to 40 families according to an Ed Qld pre-determined list.

In a small school such as this I realise that many of those selected would have been on “the list” last year as the family base from which to draw names is only 50.  Never-the less, if you have been selected as part of this sample,  please take the time to complete the survey and return it to the office.  Your response will help to shape the future direction of the school.

In today’s busy world it is difficult to remember what went on yesterday, let alone up to twelve months ago!  So before completing the survey don’t forget to preview the Highlights CD/DVD we send home at the end of each year, or consult with your children, or view the School Annual Report on our website.

I will leave you with the following two extracts from a letter written to me following a recent visit by the Acting Executive Director of Schools.

            Dear Howard,

Thank you for the opportunity to

visit your school and discuss current

            progress of the school.

Our discussions and visits to classrooms

confirm that the school is achieving a

            very sound performance and the

            educational needs of the students

continue to be in safe hands.

            xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

As I said on several occasions during

the visit, it was a real pleasure to

            visit your school.  The  local

            community should be very proud

of their local school.  Thank you

for making the school a centre

            for the local community and

            one that deserves the respect

            of everyone.

            Regards,

                        John Wessel

                        A/Executive Director (Schools)

                        Mackay Whitsunday Region.

MINISTERIAL STUDENT FREE DAY:  On Monday 03 September Hampden State School will be closed as we take the annual Ministerial Student Free Day allocated to all schools for special professional development activities.

Most other schools in the Calen Cluster will also be closed on this day as all staff  join together to develop and moderate “tools” for assessment and reporting processes.

Principal.

SCHOOL NEWS

TREE DAY :  The cooler, overcast conditions

yesterday were just right for our

   school’s Tree Day planting

   program.  Each class spent about

   half an hour planting, mulching

  and watering trees provided by

  Mackay City Council, Mike

Jubow (Nunyara Nursery), Priscilla Walters (S.G.A.P.), and Maryanne Volker (Caneland Pioneer Plant Hire).

In total the children, with help from parents Maryannne Volker and Bobette Lisle, planted an amazing 347 trees!!!.  This makes over 600 planted in two years, and we’ve only just begun to transform the back of our school!

BOOK CLUB:  The current issue of Book Club is due this coming Wednesday 15th for those wishing to place an order.

ARTS COUNCIL:  All children were seen laughing at the mad-cap antics of the Arts council performers on Wednesday morning, however the younger students were definitely the most involved group.  Watty and Volt really gave them a “charge”!

CRICKET COMP:  Unfortunately we were not able to form a Hampden super 8’s cricket team for this Sunday’s competition at Mackay North High School as most of our older children are already involved in Rock Pop Mime.

NORTH KEPPEL NEWS:  Our

Next school camp meeting will

Be held after lunch this Monday, and Edition 2 of the North Keppel News  will be distributed.

Please look out for this Newsletter as it contains an outline of the program for the week, plus the official consent and medical forms to be returned.

PIE DRIVE:  Thank you to all those families who supported the Student Council Pie Drive with purchases.

Orders will be delivered to the school this Wednesday 15th, and will be available for collection on Wednesday afternoon.   If any parents are available on Wednesday to assist with sorting the bulk order into individual orders, please let the office know and we’ll get back to you  with times.

P & C NEWS

This Sunday we commence working on the footy bars at the Junior League grounds, and continue each Sunday until the Grand Final on 02 September.

On some of these days we will be operating up to 4 bars, so a considerable number of adults are required in order to share the work around.

It is fairly easy work – some would even call it fun!! And each bar earns us $300.

If you can help us out on one or more of the following Sundays, please

 Phone      …………Frank Perna on 49 540274

or        ………………the School   on  49 540189

ROCK POP M,IME NEWS:  Our costume and prop design team are working steadily through their creations.  They would welcome any assistance you can give with cutting, sewing, painting etc.  Please call

Lorraine on 49 540464 if you can help.

Another Sunday practice please dancers.  See you there at 10am for a 12 noon finish.

CLASS ROOM ROUND UP

PREP – YEAR ONE NEWS:  Our students are involved in a book rap over the coming weeks with many other schools in the state and author Jackie French about her book “Diary of a Wombat”.  We have begun by finding other animals around our school grounds that dig holes, investigating the books illustrations and text and writing our own innovations about Rainbow Lorikeets and Green Tree Frogs.  We will submit these on line when they are finished for others to share.  We also will be able to chat on line with Jackie herself in early September.

We were due to begin our afternoon session presentation of experiments and how things work next week.  Unfortunately with so many children away with illness, we will have to postpone these until week 7.

Our Year 1 students wrote great bowling recounts last week and our prep students made delicious banana pops with Mrs Nichol.

Ten Pin Bowling

You play inside a big shed.  You have to roll a ball down the track.  You can have 1,2,3,4,5 or 6 people.  You try to knock the pins down.

You play the game inside with a big ball.  The ball is

so heavy.  You have to bowl it down the lane and at

the bottom of the lane there are ten little pins.

If you get all the pins you get a score and if you

How To Ten Pin Bowl

Ten Pin Bowling is a game where you have to

destroy the pins with a big heavy ball on the

side of the ally.  It was Fun.

Our year 6/7 ‘computer buddies’ helped us to make book spines for our rock pop mime bookcase back drop.  We chose some of our favourite children’s books from the library and copied the Author, Illustrator and Title in word art to create the spines.  Look for them on September 1st.

Year 2/3 class was very excited about the Behaviour Management Excursion to the Mackay Leisure Centre.  These are some of their recounts:

Ten Pin Bowling

You bowl down the ally with a very heavy ball.  I can bowl with three fingers.  We had to take our shoes off.  I knocked out nine pins, then Mikaela knocked out nine pins.  Alice knocked out ten pins.  The end.
